The goal of the 200 hour program is to develop a confident, competent, employable yoga instructor for asana based mat classes. With this in mind, Camp Utopia focuses on the most important things the student needs: teaching skills and experience, body knowledge, and self-knowledge. We believe the best teachers have self awareness and authenticity, as well as practical knowledge and experience, and we use the 8 Limbed Path (ethics and lifestyle) and the Chakra system (energy) as our primary tools for this.
Each week of training will introduce 1 limb of the path and work with 1 of the chakra energies, so you have time, on and between weekends, to more fully explore and experience the themes in your own life and practice. We lay out the history, philosophy and lifestyle of yoga, week by week, in a way that feels useful - never overwhelming. We use other self –discovery tools from modern science to ancient astrology, and we may ask you to do a creative project, watch a certain movie or read a specific article or book in order to facilitate your education and experience.
You are required to attend 8 mandatory weekends and complete an additional 40 hours of training through online programs, classes, workshops, advanced program weekend courses, retreats, one-on-one mentoring, or special assignments. Your teaching team will provide you with a full schedule of options to complete your hours.
4 weekends of teaching skills include deep study of the fundamental poses of yoga, and the essential tools of teaching: good verbal cues, good posture knowledge, sequencing knowledge, pace, timing, delivery, and practice, practice, practice. We also study a little bit of anatomy, meditation, breathing, and deeper yoga practices.
1 weekend of anatomy allows us to dive deep into the most important things you need to know about how the body really works, and what's important for teaching yoga safely to the largest range of people. Anatomy is complex, and hard to learn. With our hands on, experienced based teaching methods, you'll KNOW it.
3 weekends of workshops and teaching practice include interesting workshops based on the interests of each individual group, and lots of practice teaching.
Connected Community Courses: Throughout the training season, you'll work on history and philosophy through online workshops and discussions. In between each weekend gathering, you'll receive extra readings and video links. This may include asana classes, meditations, industry articles, or inspiration pieces. You will be required to complete simple assignments to show your training team that you are learning, and the groups often participate in lively, robust discussions about these topics.
Trainees can also choose from a variety of workshops, conferences, retreats, or advanced training weekends to enhance their training experience, earn extra hours offline, or make up any hours they've missed. A mix of senior teachers, guest teachers, and teachers working on advanced certification will offer classes and workshops on all aspects of yoga, and your teaching team will help you pick the right mix to meet your needs.
